Mrs. Bower was born on June 13, 1923 in Battle Creek to Irvin David and Ethel Mae (Swain) Clay. She was a graduate of Battle Creek Central and continued her education attending Springfield Bible College. She had been employed as the office manager for the old John Shay Insurance Company in Battle Creek. She had also been employed as the office manager for the Palm Lake Estate Condos in Bradenton Florida and served as the Assistant to the Condo Board of Directors from 1981 until 1997. In 1984, she served as the President of the Palm Lake Estates Residents Association.
Betty married Clarence J. Bower in Battle Creek. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1997.
Betty was a devoted Christian and worshiped at the Overflow Church in Battle Creek. She was always eager to share her faith and wanted everyone to know Jesus. She enjoyed reading, listening to Christian music and playing board games with her family and friends.
The family remembers her as very loving and social person. She was the matriarch of the family and was the self proclaimed "Boss". Her warm smile and laughter will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet R. (Glen) Burmeister of Olivet; daughter-in-law, Sharon Carlisle of Portage; 7 grandsons, 16 great grand grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; and a very special friend her "guardian angel", Waneta Haviland.
She was preceded in death by her parents Irvin and Ethel Clay; husband, Clarence; a son, Gerald L. Carlisle; a brother, C. Earl Clay; sisters, Thelma L. Bishop and Lois M. Davis.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held 11 AM Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the funeral home with Pastor Jeffery Davis of Overflow Church officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, Michigan.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Overflow Church of Battle Creek. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
