Larry Ray Hughes, 75, of Homer, Michigan passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Promedica Coldwater Regional Hospital. He was born August 17, 1948, to Raymond and Beverly (Wygant) Hughes in Marshall, Michigan.
Larry graduated from Athens High School. A lifelong farmer, Larry owned a dairy and beef farm, then later in life he harvested crops. From sunup to sundown, sometimes even past then, Larry tended to his livestock and crops, milked cows, and rode his tractor. He was a loyal John Deere owner, proudly riding a 4020 and 4030 tractor; you would never see him riding anything other than the green and yellow equipment. Around the farm you could usually hear Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, and Dwight Yoakam playing Larry’s favorite old country music. Larry was also a longtime member of the Farm Bureau.
In his younger days, Larry liked snowmobiling. Larry was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering on the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers as well as watching March Madness Basketball. He loved old TV Westerns as well as The Curse of Oak Island. During hunting season, Larry was always after raccoons, pheasants, and deer. If you were lucky enough to be neighbors with Larry, you knew he would sit and chat for hours, drop anything to help with a repair, and make you feel welcome in the community.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Sally Proctor; two daughters, Diane (Travis) Allen of Union City, Michigan and Irene Hughes of Coldwater, Michigan; two sons, Steven Hughes of Maryland and Edward (Tonya) Hughes of Jonesville, Michigan; two stepsons, Ed (Marie) Proctor of Homer, Michigan and Kevin Proctor, of Allen, Michigan; as well as four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Teresa Hughes; and brother, Gary Hughes.
A Celebration of Life for Larry will be planned at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to Kempf Family Funeral & Cremation Services, 723 US Hwy 27 N., Marshall, Michigan
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes’s Foundation, the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
