Theresa (Swaim) Moreland

January 2, 1931 — August 20, 2022

Albany, California

Theresa Swaim Moreland, 92, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2022 in Albany, California. She grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Thomas Alva Edison Swaim, a noted businessman and executive with Coca Cola, and Marguerite Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Janet Swaim. She graduated St Philip Catholic School '48 and received her English BA from Sweet Briar College, '52. Later in life, she received her nursing degree from the University of St Thomas in Houston, Texas, and cared for her father in the Detroit area for many years after that. She raised three daughters in Houston, and later lived with each of them in Naples, Florida, Cedar City, Utah, and in Albany, California, where she lived until the end of her life. A true extrovert, with an irreverent sense of humor and wonderful laugh, she made friends everywhere she lived. With a love of museums and art, she traveled around the world, sending hundreds of postcards back to her children and grandchildren. She worked as a docent at the Detroit Institute of Art for many years and was a wickedly good bridge player, passing on her love of card games to her children. Her generosity benefited many museums, religious organizations, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations. A deeply spiritual person, she studied Jung, and followed her Christian faith throughout her life. Her last few years, she was fortunate beyond measure to have such loving care givers Brenda, Charmain, Diane, Gina, Lhakpa, Noelia, and Tracy. She is survived by her daughters, Gina Monroe Moreland and son-in-law Jack Miller, Diane Reagan Moreland, Amy Banks Robinson and son-in-law Steve Robinson, and six grandchildren, David Joseph Miller, Thomas Monroe Miller, Shelby Layne Moreland, Christopher Michael Moreland, Katie Banks Robinson, and Daniel Grant Robinson. She will be interred at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek. No services are planned.
