Randy James Mullen, 76, of Battle Creek, formerly of Marshall, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the Villas at Winston Ct. in Marshall.
Randy was born in Albion, Michigan on January 8, 1947 to Raymond Mullen and Jewell (Waterhouse) Hughes. He and his brothers, Richard and Patrick were “Army Brats” and travelled to Japan, Germany, and many of the states with their parents.
He graduated from Waynesville High School, Waynesville, Missouri in 1965, during his father’s tour of duty at nearby Ft. Leonard Wood.
Randy served his country as a Marine from May 1966 to March 1969. He served with the 3rd Marine Air Wing at El Toro, California, the 5th Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendelton, California, III Marine Amphibious Force in Danang, Vietnam and the 3rd Marine Division in Dong Ha, Vietnam.
He attended Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek and received a bachelor’s degree in Geography from Western Michigan University in 1973.
In 1974, he met his beloved Deborah VerMeulen and married her in December of that year. To him, Deborah was proof that angels lived on earth.
Randy had many interesting jobs during life. His employers included the Central Intelligence Agency, the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, ESL, Inc. in Sunnyvale, California and the Santa Clara Valley Water District in San Jose, California.
He leaves behind his wife, Deborah and his brothers, Richard and Patrick Mullen both of Fremont, California. Randy was the son of Raymond Mullen of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; son of Norman Mullen of North Wakefield, Quebec; son of Thomas Mullen of North Wakefield, Quebec son of Patrick Mullen of Goulbourn, Ontario; son of Jervis Mullen of Arboe Parish, Co. Tyrone, Ireland; son of Patrick Mullen of Arboe Parish, Co. Tyrone, Ireland.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
