MARGARET M. GREENE Margaret M. Greene , age 89, of Marshall, died at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek on Wednesday morning, May 24, 2006. Mrs. Greene was born Dec. 12, 1916 in Marshall to Arthur O. and Elizabeth (VanArman) Murray. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1935, and then attended Argubright Business College in Battle Creek from where she graduated after completing the business curriculum. She then moved to Lansing where she was a secretary in the State of Michigan Insurance Department, and later at the United States Department of Agriculture. While in Lansing, she met Carl F. Greene. The couple married on November 21, 1940 Mr. Greene entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed with Naval Intelligence on Fiji . Margaret joined Carl there and they were there when Pearl Harbor was attacked. They returned to Washington D.C. and the couple then moved to Vera Cruz, Mexico where Carl was liason to the Mexican Navy. Carl became ill while in Mexico and was sent to a military hospital in Texas. Margaret then moved from Mexico with their infant daughter by herself, returning to Marshall while Carl served his country during the remainder of WWII. After Carl''s discharge, they lived several months in Holt, before moving back home to Marshall where she has spent the rest of her life. Mrs. Greene was very active in the Marshall community. She helped originate the Marshall Home Tour while a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Her kitchen in the home she and Carl built on Alcott Street was one of the first on the original" kitchen tour ", which later became the Home Tour. She was very active with Marshall Historical Society over the years, as well as the Marshall Civic Theater. She enjoyed flower gardening. Mrs. Greene was a former member of Marshall Country Club. Surviving are her husband Carl; their daughter Susan (David) Ratajczak of Marshall and their son, Jeffrey (Julia) Greene of Columbus,OH; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Travis of Marshall, Jamie Heinrich of Newport Beach,CA, Kelley (Daniel) Callicoat of Seattle,WA and Sam Greene of Columbus,OH; 4 great-granddaughters; and her sister, Marianne McVay of Manassas,VA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mildred Nolan. Friends may call at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home Tuesday, May 30, 2PM-8PM, where the family will be present to greet friends and share memories 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday , May 31, at 11AM at Kempf Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Fountain Clinic.
