Lowell Loper Wonus, 84, of Homer, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Lowell was born on November 8, 1935 in Salem, Oregon, the son of Omar Loper and Anna K. (Moore) Wonus. He married Elizabeth Richards on April 1, 1967 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion. Lowell enlisted in the US Army on June 22, 1953 and was honorably discharged on May 11, 1956 attaining the rank of SP3. He received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Lowell was employed by Cactus Meats of Phoenix, Arizona prior to serving in the US Army. Upon discharge, he attended one year of college and was then employed at the Atomic Energy Commission in Nevada. After his arrival in Albion, Michigan he worked at Union Steel Products Co., Dowding Tool Products, Beech & Rich in Battle Creek and then retiring after 15 years from Surfinco in Albion on December 31, 2000 as a Production Manager.
Lowell enjoyed feeding the birds, watching the deer come into his yard, fishing and watching western movies. He was a meticulous person around the house and garage and could fix anything as well. Lowell will be fondly remembered as a man that loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Elizabeth; his children, Lisa (Patrick) O’Brien of Great Falls, Montana, Scott (Heather) Wonus of Homer and Susan (Tom) Lowe of Albion; his 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter and his brother Don (Linda) Wonus of Peoria, Arizona. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother who raised him Pearl Anna Grimes Wonus and his sister Euseba Wonus.
Funeral services for Lowell will be held at 12 Noon, Monday, December 30, 2019 at Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Homer Chapel with Pastor Paul Koehn officiating.
