Leta B. Ray, age 94, formerly of Tekonsha died Sunday, December 3, 2006 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Battle Creek.Mrs. Ray was born on July 26, 1912 in Burlington, MI to Cecil L and Bina W. (May) Hill. Her life time was spent in the Burlington and Tekonsha areas. Her father, Ceil preceded her in death in 1918 and her mother, Bina in 1986. Leta was a graduate of Union City High School, class of 1931. On June 11, 1932, she married Harold Ray in Burlington at her home. He preceded her in death on February 9, 1987. Leta enjoyed playing the piano, organ and accordion. Her husband played the banjo. The coupled were known around the area as "The Musical Ray''s" playing their instruments at many different venues, including area churches and nursing homes. Mrs. Ray volunteered her time teaching Music in the Burlington School for many years. Leta had continued to play and entertain at the care facility she was living in as recently as 3 weeks ago.For a short time, Leta worked as a substitute Clerk at the Burlington Post Office. She was a past member of the Burlington Church of God and the Burlington Fire Department Auxiliary. Mrs. Ray was a member of the Tekonsha First Baptist Church.She is survived by children, Linda Lou (Floyd) Worden of Burlington and Larry James (Janet) Ray of Homer; 5 grandchildren, Cindy Worden, Connie Macey, Lynn Worden, Lisa Lucas, and Bradford Ray; 10 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; step-sister, Wanda Cowles of Marshall; sister-in-law, Elinor Hall of Union City; and special nephews, Cecil Hill and LaVerne Hill. She is preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Guy Hackett; brothers, Clair Hill and Gerald Hackett; step-brother, Grunt Hackett; step-sister, Juanita Howell and Wilma Hagelganse.Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Tuesday and 11:30 am to 12:30 Wednesday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1:30 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Burlington Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Calhoun County Medical Facility Activities Fund or Maplewood Memorial Fund. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
