Janet D. (MacDonald) Callahan

Janet D. Callahan, age 85, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away June 2, 2023.

Janet was born in Battle Creek on June 19, 1937, the daughter of the late Glenn and Hazel (Adams) MacDonald. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and Albion College. She pursued her graduate studies at Western Michigan University and the University of Edinburgh. Additionally, she studied at the University of Valencia in Spain. She taught school in Central America and South America. Upon returning to the United States, she worked as a teacher at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed reading, needle work, and traveling the world. She was a member of the Calhoun County Retired School Personnel, she was a nature slide chairman for the Southwestern Michigan Council of Camera Clubs, a member of the Photographic Society of America, and a member of the Battle Creek Camera Club. She often presented programs of pictures she had taken in her travels. In 2009 she visited Antarctica. In 2014, she took a four-month trip around the world. During her worldly travels she took pictures in all of the continents. She was a former member of First Congregational Church in Battle Creek and was president of the Mary Daniels Circle.

In May of 1971, she was united in marriage with Hubert “Cal” Callahan. Cal preceded her in death in 1996.

She is survived by her cousins, Thompson R. and Marilyn Adams.

Friends may gather from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49015, where a funeral ceremony will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Battle Creek Memorial Park Cemetery.
