Gary Lee Tompkins, Sr.

Gary Lee Tompkins, Sr., 74, of Homer, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 19, 1947 to Leslie and Myrtle (Signor) Tompkins in Jackson, Michigan. He graduated from Albion Senior High School in 1965 and then went onto skilled trades school to become a millwright.

On June 16, 1966 Gary entered the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged on April 17, 1970, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

Gary worked for 30 years at Hayes-Albion in Albion as a Journeyman Millwright, retiring in 1994. He loved to fish, and he also collected Snap-On Tools memorabilia. Gary could be found watching the older comedy sitcoms on TV on any given evening. He will be sadly missed for his great sense of humor and especially for his gracious and generous heart. He truly lived by the saying "It was never about me"

Gary is survived by his son; Gary (Mindy) Tompkins, Jr. of Homer, Michigan; his ex-wife; Susan Tompkins of Homer, Michigan, his grandchildren; Lauren Tompkins of Manitou Beach, Michigan, Rachel (Wyatt Vandybogurt) Tompkins of Coldwater, Michigan, Gary Lee Tompkins III of Manitou Beach, Michigan, Chip Tompkins of Homer, Michigan, and Ryan Tompkins of Homer, Michigan, and his great grandson; Ellis Vandybogurt of Coldwater, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Russell Tompkins, and his grandson; Champ Tompkins.

Visitation for Gary will take place on Monday, April 11, 2022, from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Kempf Family Funeral & Cremation Services, 303 S. Hillsdale St. Homer, Michigan 49245 with the memorial service to follow at 12:00 pm at the funeral home, Al Henson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
