Elmo Winston Martin, age 92, of Battle Creek passed away on August 13, 2018 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Battle Creek.
Elmo was born April 5, 1926 in Frankfort, MI, the son of Myron L. and Matie P. (Denike) Martin. When he was 5 years old, they moved to the family farm in Levering MI. Elmo attended a one-room schoolhouse and worked with the CCC during his teens. Elmo enlisted into the U.S. Army on August 09, 1944 and proudly served our country until his honorable discharge on November 29, 1946.
Elmo married Shirley Barnard in Battle Creek in 1962. They raised 3 children and shared 56 loving years together.
He retired from the Kellogg Company in 1986 after 39 years of service.
Elmo was an early member of the Wattles Park Men's Club and enjoyed helping the Boy Scouts. He and Shirley volunteered several years with Roving Volunteers in Christ Services (RVICS) and later enjoyed volunteering at Gooberville, the Kellogg's Company store. Elmo enjoyed gardening, landscaping, building projects and being outdoors. He and Shirley also loved wintering in Parker, Arizona. Elmo was known as "The Helper" and was always there to lend a helping hand. He was a very special man to many. Elmo is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Martin of Battle Creek; children, Paul Gray of Holland, David (Frances) Gray of Battle Creek, and E. Timothy (Beth) Martin of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Tony (Sarah) Remeur of Battle Creek, Aaron (Christina) Remeur of Indian River, Eric Remeur of Indian River, Michelle (Dana) Chapman of Indian River, Allison Evans of FL, Andrea Evans of Battle Creek, Michael Evans of Battle Creek, Brandon (Danielle) Martin of CA, Tyler (Jennifer) Martin of LA, and Lauren Martin of Grand Rapids; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; and nieces, Connie, Sharon, Pat, Donna, and Carol. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Matie Martin; brother, Rufus Martin; and sisters, Ardith Cassidy and Arthea Borden.
Visitation will be held at the Kempf Family Funeral Home, 723 Old US 27 North, Marshall Chapel Friday August 17 from 9:30-11am. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 11am with Pastor John Grafton officiating. Burial will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
