Donald Richard Scherer

Donald Richard Scherer, age 89, of Colon died Saturday, June 03, 2006 at his home in the loving care of his daughters.Mr. Scherer was born on May 13, 1917 in Tekonsha to John and Bertha (Toeppe) Scherer. He attended school in Tekonsha and then served in the United States Navy during WWII. On June 3, 1938, he married Elsie L. Squire. The couple resided in the Burlington area for 14 years until moving to Colon in 1970. They had also lived in Tekonsha, Battle Creek and California.Mr. Scherer had been employed as a millwright at the Eaton Corporation, retiring in 1976. Other places of employment included, The New York Central Railroad Company, Schafer Manufacturing, Waterfront Employers Association of California, Owens Ames & Kimball Co. in Grand Rapids and the United States Register Co. in Battle Creek.Donald was a very hard worker and following his retirement roofed many buildings and barns in the Tekonsha and Burlington areas. He loved being outside in nature. He owned ten acres of land near Burlington and spent many hours there mowing and trimming trees. He enjoyed fishing and in his youth hunting. A favorite past time of his was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.He is survived by daughters, Donna Jean White of Battle Creek, Annette Muckel of Colon and Clara "Didge" Scherer of Battle Creek; sons, John E. "Jack" Scherer of Hitchcock, TX, Roger W. Scherer of Battle Creek and Michael Scherer of Battle Creek; 23 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; sister, Carrie Thunder of Marshall. He is preceded in death by 3 sons, Gerald Richard Scherer, Russell George Scherer, and Phillip J. Scherer, his sisters, Ethel Collins and Helen Rigg; and brothers, Henry, Russell, George, Robert and Lewis Scherer.The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are to the Donald and Elsie Scherer Family Scholarship Fund. .
