Donald Hunkins was born November 6, 1945, in Flint, Michigan. He had an impish grin and a head for business. Accounting was a fascinating world to him, and seeing the numbers line up just so gave him a thrill that rivaled a Perry Mason revelation. 

Don never met a Spartan he didn’t like, and, while not a Catholic, he believed Tom Izzo should be considered for sainthood. 

A lifelong lover of fishing, he enjoyed nothing more than a quiet morning in his pontoon boat on a flat lake. An empty bucket was never a sign of a wasted expedition; the joy was just the time on the water. 

Don was generous to a fault; any sad story was one he’d try to help fix with his checkbook. A conservative CPA, he helped anyone he could with the ardor of a liberal activist. 

He loved westerns, from “Paladin” to “Maverick,” Gene Autry to Roy Rogers. But his greatest love was Debbi, his wife of 57 years. Everyone who ever knew him learned quickly that Debbi wasn’t just the center of his universe; she was his universe. He held on through 28 years of rare cancer just to make sure she was taken care of. 

She’s okay, Dad. We’ve got her now. Happy trails, ‘til we meet again.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 11, at 11:00am.
