David Dene Callihan, age 89, of Battle Creek, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on January 18, 2022. He was born on March 16, 1932. He became a Christian in 1976. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Battle Creek. His parents were Arthur and Rhea Callihan, former Barry County residents. They married and moved to Battle Creek, where David spent most of his life. He received championship ribbons for swimming in Junior and Senior High school. He played in band, baseball, basketball, and football. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1950. He was hired by the Kellogg Company and worked in production for thirty-eight years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Kellogg 25 year club. David served his country for three years in the United States Navy, the branch known as Naval Air. He was honorably discharges in April of 1955. He belonged to the Navy swim team in Alameda, California. His spouses were Carol Willbur Mathews, Wilma Varner Callihan, and Dona Varga-Callihan. Dona survives him and resides in Florida. He is also survived by his daughters, Callie Bartlett of Union City, MI and Karen (Mark) Staal of Wyoming, MI; grandchildren, Janice Gauss of Coldwater, MI; Shane (Melissa) Hodge, D.O. of Raleigh, N.C., David (Samantha) Hodge of Jenison, MI, Don Staal of Wyoming, MI, and Joe Staal of Wyoming, MI; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Braeden, Graham, Lila, Zoe, Carys, and Lucy.
Friends may visit with the family from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2022, at Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49015. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Battle Creek Memorial Park Cemetery.
