Dan W. George

October 7, 1948 — January 3, 2023

Marshall

Dan W. George, 74, of Marshall, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, surrounded by family.

He was born on October 7, 1948 to William and Dolores (Bracken) George in Detroit, Michigan.

Dan graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Mt. Morris, Michigan.  He continued his education at The University of Michigan-Flint, earning his bachelor’s degree in Political Science while also serving as Student Government President.  Dan later received his master’s degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University.

On January 24, 1970 he married Susan Albrant in Flint, Michigan and they moved to Marshall soon after.  Dan worked as a teacher before becoming Director of the Calhoun County Health Department.  He then served as Administrative Director for BAMEC (Battle Creek Area Medical Education Corporation) where he educated physicians to become family practitioners.   From 1984-1988, he and Susan ran a French bakery, Elysee Boulangerie in Battle Creek, after which he began his long career as a stockbroker and financial advisor.

Dan was the longtime leader of the Whiner's Bicycle Club, which proudly met to ride R.A.G.B.R.A.I. in Iowa each summer.  Dan rode with the group for over 25 years, helping the Whiners become a well-known international bicycle club.

He also loved working outdoors, building successful gardens and becoming a skilled beekeeper, producing honey for loved ones for numerous years. He was a terrific athlete, playing multiple sports and running marathons before switching to the road bike.  Additionally, he was a great artist, including watercolor and woodworking, and built enough furniture to help fill his kids’ homes. He was also very proud of his family’s lake property and the cabin he helped design and build.  He wanted a space where his family could all play together, and the memories it afforded will last his family a lifetime.

Dan was exceptionally thoughtful and witty; he often brought loved ones together over homemade meals, exceptional baked goods and plenty of laughter. He was a proud Michigan Wolverine and brought his family and friends to decades of Michigan sporting events, creating a tailgate party wherever he went.

Dan is survived by his loving wife Susan, their children, Jeffrey (Kate) George of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Matthew (Kellie) George of Clarkston, Michigan and Christine George (Lauren Rosenberg) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; his grandchildren, Anna George, Allie George, Ella George and Amelia Rosenberg; his siblings, Lynn (Larry) Neuberg of Los Angeles, California, Kathleen Gensheimer of The Villages, Florida and Michael George (Kyle Hawkins) of Chicago, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Maggie Rosenberg, and his brother-in-law, Robert Gensheimer.

A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Kempf Family Funeral Home, 723 US Hwy 27 N, Marshall, Michigan 49068.
