CADDIE L. SMITHCaddie Leroy Smith, age 93, of Marshall died Friday morning, June 2, 2006 at Tendercare of Marshall.Mr. Smith was born in McGuffey, Ohio on January 14, 1913 to the late Harry and Esta (Amsler) Smith. He graduated from McGuffey High School. In1932, he came to Marshall and has lived at 119 South Liberty, since 1942.He served in World War II for more than three years. He served with the 754th Field Artillery Battalion in Northern France and Rhineland.He returned to Marshall and on June 16, 1951, he married the former Eileen Granskog, an area teacher. She preceded him in death March 9, 2006. He is also preceded in death by a son, Allan Smith and a brother, Leonard Smith.Caddie was employed by the Eaton manufacturing Company for over 35 years and retired in January, 1975. He was a member of its Quarter Century Club.He was a skilled woodworker, making cabinets, children''s furniture and doll furniture. He completely remodeled the family home. He enjoyed repairing all kinds of appliances and making them work.For more than thirty years he and his wife were enthusiastic exhibitors at the Calhoun County Fair. Caddie won many ribbons for his art work, woodwork, antiques and vegetables.He and his wife traveled extensively and had visited all 50 states and many foreign countries. Included were two trips to Europe and Russia, China, South America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many others. He was the photographer and they gave many slide presentations to area schools, churches, and organization. Caddie was an associate member of the Calhoun County Chapter of retired School personnel. For two years they were chairmen for Armchair travel, an interest group of retired school personnel.He attended Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of its Senior Fellowship.He is survived by a daughter, Regina Figureras of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a son, Brian R. Smith of Ann Arbor; 6 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn (Fred) Dobbertien of Marshall; and many nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 8:00 Sunday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. A funeral service to remember and celebrate his life will be held 10:30 AM Monday, June 5, 2006 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Salvation Army or to the Jackson/Oaklawn Hospice Care. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
