Augusta Irene (Reynolds) Layton

Augusta Irene Layton, 95, of Marshall, Michigan went home to be with her Lord on Friday, July 8, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 25, 1927 to Thomas and Elizabeth (Hale) Reynolds in Carroll District, W. Virginia. At a very young age her mother died, and she was raised by her father and stepmother Pansy Brumfield.

Augusta grew up in Lincoln County, West Virginia, graduating from Hamlin High School in 1946. One of her first jobs was a first-grade schoolteacher and then she went to work as a switch-board operator, both jobs were in West Virginia. Although her first marriage ended in divorce, they welcomed a daughter Elizabeth. On July 5, 1954, she married Pat Layton.

In 1954 they came to Marshall and started a new beginning here. She worked at Win Schuler’s as a waitress and then she went to work at St. Mary’s Catholic School as a custodian. Augusta also worked at cleaning houses for estate sales and at the Cronin family’s house. In February of 1973 she started working for Court-Putnam Funeral Home as a housekeeper and many other families as well. In 1979, she worked at Roberts Packaging in Battle Creek.

She was a lifelong member of several church’s including the Church of the Nazarene in Marshall and in Battle Creek, where she was active with the choir and being a Sunday school teacher. Augusta loved to sew, as she was a professional seamstress working out of her home. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, gardening and canning. Augusta made her children's clothing as well as her own and on occasion stuffed animals. She was an excellent cook and baker. Augusta was an avid reader with the Bible being her favorite. She found great comfort in her belief of God and Jesus Christ.

Augusta is survived by her loving daughter, Kathleen (Gordon) Smith of Marshall, Michigan, her siblings; Louise Tabor of West Virginia, Sylvia Marts of West Virginia, Ray Reynolds of Florida and Art Reynolds of Ohio. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren, Darrell Layton, Sherry Layton, Bonnie Adams-Stevens, Kimberly Davis, Jennifer Pratt, Amber Abajian and Kathrine Smith, 17 great grandchildren, numerous great great grandchildren, and several great great great grandchildren. She was also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother; Pansy Reynolds, her daughter; Elizabeth Nongueskwa, her grandsons; David Lancaster and James Layton, her stepchildren; James Layton, Clarence Layton and Frankie Layton and her siblings; Junior Reynolds, Buzzie Reynolds, Edward Reynolds, Marjorie Hutchison, Ernest Reynolds, and Ruth Meadows.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 16, 2022, 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Grace Baptist Church 500 Cosmopolitan, Marshall, Michigan 49068 with the funeral services to follow at 11:00 am at the church. Pastor Brandon Crawford, officiating. Burial will take place in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
