Alfred “Al” Arthur VanderHorst, 78, of Marshall, passed away on July 2, 2022, at home following a long, courageous battle with heart and lung disease. Al was surrounded by the love and support of his family.
Al was born on September 17, 1943, to John and Alice (LaCourse) VanderHorst in Toledo, OH, where he graduated from Woodward High School. Al left the area on September 29, 1961, to proudly serve his country in the US Navy and was honorably discharged on January 28, 1966.
On April 1, 1967, he married the love of his life, Nancy Wintersteen and they made their home in Marshall, MI. Al worked as a bricklayer for Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union Local 2, he is 53 years retired. Al loved to hunt, fish, garden and go to church, but most of all spending time with his family. In 2004, he graduated from International School of Ministry and was a long-time member of New Hope Church, now known as Network Family Church in Albion.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy; two daughters, Alice VanderHorst, and Wanda (Michael) Secrest both of Marshall; granddaughter, Samantha Ruiz; grandson, Jerel Secrest; two sisters, Carol (Steve) Rutz, and Dorothy (Bill) Stacy; three brothers, Paul (Jean) VanderHorst, James (Sheila) VanderHorst, and Douglas (Shelia) VanderHorst.
He was preceded in death by parents; daughter, Christina Ruiz; brothers, Steve VanderHorst, and Edward VanderHorst.
Services have been entrusted to Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 723 US Hwy 27 N, Marshall, MI 49068. Per Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place with interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, Michigan 49012. A Celebration of Life service will be held at New Hope Worship Center, 13600 28 Mile Rd, Albion, MI 49224 on Saturday, July 16, 2022, beginning at 1:00 PM.
