Ronald John Serne, age 80, of Battle Creek passed away February 10, 2018 at the home of Mike and Marianne Heikkila where he was always surrounded by loving family.
Ronald was born on December 27, 1937 in Holland, MI to John Cornelius and Mary (Grenzie) Serne. He graduated from Holland High School with the class of 1955.
Ronald married Jeanne Ann Malek on June 14 1982 in Portage. They were married 29 years until she preceded Ron in death on February 23, 2012.
Ronald enlisted in the United States Navy on October 26, 1960 and was honorably discharged on November 21, 1963. He reenlisted the very next day onboard the USS Lexington and was again honorably discharged on October 31, 1969.
Ronald received many medals during his naval career including but not limited to the Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
After his military career Ronald worked as an Electrician for General Motors for over twenty years.
Ronald enjoyed social media, cookouts with family, and watching movies. He loved animals and would often donate to the Humane Society. Ronald enjoyed being on the computer. He loved children, and getting hugs and kisses from his special little friend Joey.
Ronald is survived by several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Ray Heikkila; sister-in-law, Joan Heikkila; special friend, Joey Kline; and cat, Angel. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Serne; wife, Jeanne Serne; one brother; and one sister.
Cremation has been conducted and a committal service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery on Friday February 16, 2018 at 1:30pm.
The family is being served by the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 SW Capital Ave., Battle Creek Chapel.
