July 14, 1925 ~ September 27, 2018 (age 93)

Obituary

Dean L. Rall, 93 of Ceresco, passed away on September 27, 2018, at the Countryside Adult Foster Care Home surrounded by his family following a short illness.

Dean was born on July 14, 1925 in Bedford Towship, to Grover and Cora (Babcock) Rall. He attended Delton-Kellogg Schools. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army. Dean served in Europe and took part in the Normandy and Utah Beach proceedings. He was honorably discharged in 1947. On October 16, 1948 he married the love of his life, Gwen Mongerson, in Battle Creek. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2003.

Dean farmed his whole life, both in Barry County and in Newton Township where he raised cattle and Quarter Horses. He also retired from Post Cereals in 1980 after working 32 years. Farming and family were everything to Dean, and he still helped on the farm until his health got the better of him in 2015. Dean was a member of the Post 25 year Club, the Michigan Buckskin Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and was a 4-H leader in Calhoun County. Dean loved and supported his family and many others who were considered his extended family. Everyone always called him Grandpa. He was awarded the friend of 4-H award in 1999 by the Calhoun County 4-H thanking him for the support he showed to so many young people in the county. Dean loved all kinds of music and while working on the farm he taught himself to yodel, a talent he enjoyed sharing. He also enjoyed spending time with his dog Tillie, and helping out his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Deenna (Steve) Hamilton of Ceresco; grandchildren, Jody (Bryan) Davis, Randy (Dawn) Card, Kevin (Jessica) Hamilton, and Johanna (Andy) Wilson; 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Gwen; daughter Paula Smith; and siblings, Lynwood Puffpaff, Don Rall, Rex Rall, Hilda Dahn, Opal Greenman, Frances Cantrell, and Delores Rall.
