Craig K. Kempf

Craig K. Kempf

Owner/Funeral Director/Manager Bellevue Chapel

Craig was born in Marshall to Robert and Beryl Kempf and is a lifelong resident. He graduated from Marshall High School with the class of 1972. He graduated from Kellogg Community College and attended Wayne State University's Mortuary Science Program from where he graduated with Honors in 1975. He earned his Michigan Mortuary Science license in September 1975.

Craig purchased the former Kelser-Farley Funeral Home Aug.1, 1978 and renamed it Craig K.Kempf Funeral Home from where he has served his community. Craig served as a firefighter with the Marshall Fire Department from 1975 to 2012, retiring as a Sergeant. He also served with the Fredonia Fire Department as a firefighter from 1996 till retiring in 2012. He was a charter member of Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Service and later served as the first Board President of the Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Authority. Craig is a member of the Marshall Exchange Club, the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church,  Cremation Association of North America and National Funeral Directors Association. He is married to Suzette M. (Bollenbacher) Kempf and is the proud father of Sarah R. Kempf, Ben (Stephanie) Ziskal and Jon (Rebecca) Ziskal, and a delighted grandfather of Zachary Ziskal and Cameron Ziskal!

Sue was born in Decatur, Indiana to Don and Louise Bollenbacher. She graduated from Adams Central High School with Honors in Monroe, Indiana. Sue has been a resident of Marshall since 1979. She formerly was Pricing Administrator for the Marshall Felpausch Food Center where she worked for 30 years. She joined Craig assisting families in 1998 as a receptionist and in 2008 took on the full time position of Office Manager.

Sue is a member of Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. She has been a supporter of Marshall athletic programs especially while her sons were playing sports at MHS. She is married to Craig K. Kempf and is the proud mother of Ben (Stephanie) Ziskal, Jon (Rebecca) Ziskal, step-mom of Sarah Kempf, and an especially proud and doting grandmother of Zachary Ziskal and Cameron Ziskal!

Doug was born in Albion, graduated from Albion High School, Kellogg Community College and Wayne State University. He earned his Mortuary Science License from the State of Michigan in 1982. Doug joined Craig Kempf assisting families in 1986. He and his family attend Family Bible Church.

Doug is a member of The Cremation Association Of North America and National Funeral Directors Association. He has been active in Marshall Recreation programs for many years. Doug and his wife the former Brenda Markovich (also an Albion native) are proud parents of Emily Mills.


Jacob E. Washburn

Funeral Director/Manager Homer Chapel

Jacob was born in Marshall. He is the son of Steve and Teresa (Tucker) Washburn. Jacob grew up on the family farm in Fredonia Township and attended Marshall High School where he was active in Marshall Singers and FFA and Calhoun County 4-H. He graduated in 1999 . He attended Kellogg Community College and Worsham College Of Mortuary Science in Chicago from where he graduated. He earned his Michigan Mortuary Science License in April of 2004. Later that year he joined Craig and Doug assisting families.

Jacob serves as a firefighter on Fredonia Township and Marshall Fire Departments, and is a Michigan Licensed Basic EMT serving with Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Authority. He is a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Cremation Association Of North America and National Funeral Directors Association. Jacob is an active member of Calhoun County Agricultural and Industrial Society and emcees events at the Calhoun County Fair yearly.  He enjoys farming with his father Steve and uncle Dan Washburn.


Win Swieczkowski

General Manager/Funeral Director

Win was born in Lansing, Michigan and grew up in the Saginaw area. He has spent his entire working career in funeral service. He attended Wayne State University School of Mortuary Science and has been a licensed funeral director since 2000. Win recently joined our team as our Manager of Funeral Service Operations in October of 2019 and is eager to meet the communities we serve  He is a proud member of Kiwanis International.  He is a member of The Cremation Association Of North America and National Funeral Directors Association.

Win is married to Carrie Swieczkowski and they have four dogs, Miles, Francesca, Ernie and Lucky. They enjoy traveling, especially to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

He loves spending time outdooors and enjoys fly fishing, golfing and long distance running.

Funeral DIrector/Manager Battle Creek Chapel

Chuck Stallard has returned to serve families in Battle Creek and Bellevue by joining the Kempf Family of Funeral Directors.  Chuck was previously employed as a funeral director with the Shaw Funeral Homes of Battle Creek and Bellevue.  Chuck earned his Mortuary Science Certificate and Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Wayne State University.  Chuck and his wife Beth are the parents of 5 children and 4 grandchildren, whom they enjoy their time with!  He is a past president of Battle Creek Kiwanis.  He currently serves as a board member for Goodwill Industries of South Central Michigan.  He is a member of National Funeral Directors Association and the Cremation Association Of North America,.

Gina is our Office Manager and a Family Service Associate in Marshall.  Gina and her husband Scott are the proud parents of sons Zachary and Tyler.  She and her husband Scott have followed their sons' sporting events, especially hockey, faithfully!

Cindy Andrews is our Lead Family Service Associate  and is a familiar face at our front door in Marshall when you come in. Cindy recently retired from her career as a beautician in Battle Creek and Marshall and joined us in caring for our families we serve. Cindy is a member of Surrendered Life Church.  She enjoys time with her daughters and husband.

Angie helps families as an Administrative Assistant and Family Service Associate, working with Gina Fox and Sue Kempf to take care of the many tasks done behind the scenes that are necessary to care for our families.  


Cheryl Marshall

Advanced Planning Consultant & Family Service Advisor

Cheryl Marshall is our Advanced Planning Consultant and Family Service Advisor. She also serves as our Community Education Coordinator and Veteran’s Coordinator. Cheryl is originally from Genesee County. She and her husband Rick have been married 38 years. Cheryl has completed numerous professional education classes to assist families she serves. She has served families for nearly 20 years helping them plan for the future.

Paul is a lifelong area resident. He retired from Lutz John Deere in Ceresco. He served with the Marshall Township Fire Department the majority of his life, with many years as Chief Of The Department until he retired at the age of 65. Paul has assisted Craig in serving area families since 1986. He is the proud father of David (Carol) Kiessling, Jeanette (David) Glen, and Robert (Marjorie) Kiessling. Paul was married to Donna who passed away in 2009.  He is a longtime active member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Glenn is a resident of Eckford Township. He is married to the former Allison Twist. Glenn retired from Battle Creek Fire Department in 1997 where he served as a Lieutenant. Glenn joined Craig assisting families in 1998. Glenn enjoys traveling to Northern Michigan with his family and friends as well as spending lots of time with all of his grandchildren!

Cece is a retiree from State Farm. She joined Kempf's assisting families the year she retired.   Cece and her husband Warren enjoy golfing and being active outdoors together.  Cece assists helping as a Marshall receptionist.

Maggie has served the Battle Creek community as a Family Service Associate for many years at the funeral home.  She is a familiar sight at our Battle Creek Chapel and...a devoted U of M fan!

Ken has served the Battle Creek community as a Family Service Associate for many years.  He is a Kellogg retiree and a passionate golfer!  Ken is a familiar sight at the door of our Battle Creek Chapel and assisting at services.

Susan is a familiar sight at the door of our Battle Creek chapel.  She has served her community through funeral service for over 22 years, working many of those with her late husband Jerry.  She enjoys meeting, greeting and helping people.

Rosemary is the former owner and operator of the former "Rosemary's" at Wright's Corners south of Marshall.  After selling the store she became a school aide for Homer Public Schools and joined the Kempf Family as a Funeral Service Associate.  She is a familiar sight in Homer and Marshall at our doors.

Sheri retired after a long career with the City Of Marshall where she assisted Marshall' citizens in many ways in the course of her days at City Hall.  Sheri joined Kempf's as a Family Service Associate in 2014.  She is a Homer native and enjoys helping her friends and family at the Homer Chapel.  Of course her favorite job is being Grandma to her grandchildren with her husband, Grandpa Keith!

Gabi is still on duty at the door, usually in Marshall. We lost her sister Gretchen in April of 2018. She is still missed.

"Mr. Underhill" is a beloved retired Marshall Middle School teacher and MPS coach.  Gerry joined Kempf's after his retirement serving families as a Family Service Associate, assisting with reception and end of life services.  He is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Steve retired from Airway Manufacturing in Olivet after a career in manufacturing as a financial officer in industry.   He is an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and and a charter member of the board of directors  of the Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Authority which he still serves on.   Steve and his wife Joyce enjoying being grandparents and camping.

Larry is retired from Spring Arbor College where he was responsible for all the college's buildings and grounds care and maintenance.  Larry's real favorite job is as Grandpa to his grandchildren!  Larry joined the Kempf Family caring for families in 2018.

Steve retired after a long career of retail grocery management with Felpausch Food Stores and Walter-Dimmick's Wright Corners C Store.  He previously owned and operated a custom meat cutting business in Marshall Township.   Steve is the Marshall Township Fire Chief and serves as a board member of Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Authority.  He and his wife Carol enjoy their roles as grandparents.  They are members of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Alice is a Family Service Associate, greeting and helping the family and their friends as they come in to our Battle Creek Chapel.

Cindy is a Family Service Associate helping Kempf's care for the family's they serve.  She is retired from a long and successful career in banking.  She is a member of Lyon Lake United Methodist Church.  Cindy enjoys time with her husband traveling, and friends.

Steve Washburn retired as Waste Department Superintendant for the City of Marshall.  He is a retired Chief of the Fredonia Fire Department.  Steve is a member of Zion Lutheran Church.  He is the father of our Jacob Washburn.  Steve, Jacob and Steve's brother Dan farm together.  He especially enjoys any time he and his wife Teresa get to spend with their grandson!

Patti retired from her career with State Farm Insurance and joined the Kempf Family as a Family Service Associate in 2019.  She is a devoted and loving mother who enjoys time with her family and friends!

Kim joined the Kempf Family as a Family Service Associate in 2019.  She is a longtime employee of the USDA- Farm Service Agency where she has been part of the team assisting area farmers.


Melanie A. Johnson

Bereavement Coordinator

Melanie is a student at Central Theological Seminary, receiving her Master's in Divinity. She is a non-denominational minister through her training with Universal Life.

She serves as the chaplain for the Tekonsha Fire Department and Marshall Firefighters Authority Ambulance. Melanie is a sworn deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office serving on the Victim's Services Unit. She also has received training in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing. 

She graduated from Celebrant Training at the National Funeral Directors Association headquarters in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Melanie is attending Dr. Alan Wolfelt's Center For Loss and Life Transitions Center after attending Grief Companioning Skills in Fort Collins, Co. She uses this training to facilitate various grief support groups at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Marshall Chapel. The grief support group meets from 6 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.
