Virlon M. Johnson, age 83, of Battle Creek, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, with her son at her side. She was born February 7, 1937 in Elba, Alabama to Fred Morris and Bessie Grant Morris. She was united in marriage with Wilbur Johnson on July 1, 1961, whom she had met while he was serving in the United States Army. They enjoyed their time in Anchorage, Alaska while Wilbur was stationed there. He preceded her in death on November 7, 1992.
She worked for Show & Tell and Meijer for many years and enjoyed talking with the customers she met there. She was a member of Emmett Street Missionary Church for many years. She currently was a member of North Avenue Church of God. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, bird watching, gardening, and playing Bunco with friends. She liked to travel and visited Branson, MO, England, Ireland, and many of the western states. She also enjoyed returning to Alaska, which was one of her favorite trips. She was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching Sunday afternoon races. She collected dolls and Boyd Bears. Virlon dearly loved her dogs Susie, Ellie, and Lady. Most of all she enjoyed seeing pictures and hearing stories of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her son, Patrick (Laurie) Johnson; three grandchildren, Derek Johnson, Taylor (Logan) Connell, and Kirstin (Adam) VanderWall; three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Gracelyn, and Kensi Johnson; two nephews, Earl (Monica) Willis and Wayne Willis. She is also survived by special friends, David Jones and Marlene Elfin.
She was preceded in death by her baby daughter, Brenda Johnson; her second husband, Martin Suttles; her sister, Vida Shelton; and her niece, Virlon "Virginia" Willis and nephew, Jonathan Willis.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49015. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2021, officiated by Pastor Jeff Eckman. A committal service will follow the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, MI 49012. Please visit
