Vesta "Ginny" Virginia (Forehand) Outman

April 18, 1934 — September 27, 2021

Emmett Township

Ginny Outman was 87 years old when she went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 27, 2021 and her family surrounded her as she made her journey into paradise.

Ginny was born on April 18, 1934 to Richard Ackerman Forehand and Mable Marie (Spaulding) Forehand – Tingay at the old Nicholas Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan.  She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1953.

Ginny met her soon to be husband Robert Lee Outman in their gym class as they were paired up for square dancing.  She told her mother that Robert was a geek.  But on August 29, 1953 Ginny married this geek and they spent 68 years together.

Ginny started working at the age of 14 at the Chase Soda Bar and Huffs Hardware in the Wattles Park area of Battle Creek, Michigan. From 1952 to 1954, Ginny worked at the L.W. Robinsons Department Store in downtown Battle Creek.  From 1955 to 1957 she worked for the Wolverine Insurance Company in Battle Creek.

When Bob joined the US Army, she moved to Fort Riley, Kansas and then to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  Ginny returned to Battle Creek in 1958 until the birth of their daughter in 1962. She was a stay at home mother until 1968 when she went to work part time for the Harper Creek School district as a cook.  In 1977 she went to full time status and retired on May 1, 1994 from Beadle Lake Elementary School.

Ginny was a member of the Convis Union United Methodist Church in Battle Creek for over 50 years.  She was very active in the church’s functions, being involved in the Women’s Society, Youth Group Leader, Sunday School, VBS, dinners, funeral dinners and holding several different positions in the church.

Ginny was a very caring soul, always putting others needs before hers.  She enjoyed volunteering.  For 20 years she was a 4-H knitting leader of the Country Knitters with her mother.  They taught boys and girls how to knit and displayed their items at the Calhoun County Fair in Marshall, Michigan.

She also volunteered as a Campfire Girls Leader, making quilts for the Charitable Union, preparing meals for fair workers in the Bonnie and Clyde building at the Calhoun County Fair, along with helping out with dinners at the B.E. Henry Building in Marshall.  Additionally, Ginny lent a hand with the shared dinners and the Truck or Treat events at the Maple United Methodist Church.

She and Bob were the adopted grandparents for the Southwest Michigan Young Marines in Battle Creek.  On many occasions the unit would come to their property for encampments and they would prepare all the meals for the unit.

Along with volunteering Ginny enjoyed going on bus trips and traveling the United States, fishing trips to Canada where she could fish and watch the Loons, gardening, watching the humming birds that came every year to her feeders, and the hot air balloons.

What brought Ginny the most joy in life was her family, watching her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren grow up.

Ginny is survived by her husband of 68 years Robert Lee Outman; her daughter Robin (Terry) Halsey; grandchildren Daniel Ray Halsey, Terri Elizabeth Castro, Jennifer Ann Chaffins, Zachary Halsey and Nickole (Andrew) Carroll-Halsey-Evans; twelve great-grandchildren:  Brittany Halsey, Danielle Culp, Xander-Kia Halsey, Jessica Castro, Troy Castro, Steven Castro, Daniel Castro-Case, Ashlyn Halsey, Charles O’Connell, Westyn Halsey, Oaklynn Halsey and Emersyn Evans plus five great-great grandchildren:  Zoey Shepard, Jarahmiah Pattinson, Amias Pattinson, Anthony Case and Nathaniel Case.  Several nieces and nephews and a special cousin Thomas O’Heran also survived her.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents Richard A. Forehand and Mable M. (Spaulding) Forehand-Tingay; her step-parents Thomas Tingay and Arlene Forehand and a great-granddaughter Zoie Carroll-Halsey
