Thomas Charles “Squidd” Metzger, 71, of Marshall, passed away in the loving care of his wife and family at his home on his beloved Lyon Lake on Saturday, February 8, 2020.
Tom was born on March 25, 1948 in Marshall to Alden S. “Sid” and Eleanor Mary (Flynn) Metzger. He grew up in Marshall and was a 1966 graduate of Marshall High School. He attended Kellogg Community College. In high school he was an accomplished track star for the Redskins. He was nominated to attend and attended Boys’ State while in high school.
He was married to Jane Marie “Moose” Sitarski at St. John Catholic Church in Albion on June 16, 1973. The couple have enjoyed a long and fruitful marriage together since then.
Tom worked for over 30 years at Michigan Kitchen Distributors in Marshall as a cabinet maker, and later in their Top Shop from where he retired in 2011.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He lived for many years on the shore of Lyon Lake, a place he loved. Friends and family enjoyed many campfires with Squidd, a favorite pastime of his! He loved the family dogs (mainly Labradors) over the years, which often led to the phrase “When I die, I hope I come back as one of Squidd’s dogs!”. His family and friends were first priority in his life.
Squidd was a talented carpenter. He practically rebuilt his and Jane’s home on Lyon Lake by himself. He replaced floors, windows, bathrooms and the kitchen. He built their garage where he enjoyed many hours working on his Harleys.
Early in his life Squidd took up an old hobby of his father Sid’s, riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He rode everywhere he could both for work and fun as long as the weather was halfway cooperative! He took yearly motorcycle trips around the county, state and country to bike events with the group of friends that he had rode with since a teenager. Trips to Milwaukee were numerous and well enjoyed.
He was a skilled Harley mechanic, maintaining and rebuilding his Harleys. Squidd had accomplished a beautiful restoration on his long owned and well ridden Panhead. A constant work in progress!
Surviving are his beloved wife Jane; his sister Jane (Jim) Oliver of Marshall, his brothers John (Nic) Metzger of Marshall and Michael (Elaine) Metzger of Chicago; his nieces and nephews Mark, Dana, Josh, Megan, Maddie, Keely and Alden.
He was preceded in death by his and Jane’s infant son Eric Metzger, his parents Sid and Eleanor Metzger, and his brother Daniel Metzger.
