Shirley Louise Gregg

October 6, 1925 — June 14, 2018

Shirley Louise Gregg, 92, of Traverse City, Michigan passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14th, 2018. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on October 6th, 1925, in Homer, Michigan to Charles and Lula (Bayn) Holmes. She was the youngest of ten siblings who graduated from Homer High School. On March 15th, 1947, she married Duane R. Gregg, who preceded her in death on August 10, 2005. She worked for Calhoun Telephone Company for twenty-five years as an executive secretary until her retirement in 1986. During this time, she and Duane spent many winters in Florida and enjoyed spending time there with friends. She also was a member of bridge club for many years while she lived in Homer.

Shirley was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Homer until she moved to Traverse City in 2007. She made this move to be closer to family and while there, became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Traverse City until the time of her death. Shirley loved to quilt and made each of her grandchildren one as a remembrance. She also loved to play the organ. Upon moving to Traverse City, she resided at Bay Ridge Senior Apartments, where she easily made many friends. There, she enjoyed playing cards and special trips with friends around the Traverse City area. Shirley and her daughter were very close and Karen will always treasure the many great memories and the recent years together since Shirley's moving to Traverse City. She also was able to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren have many happy memories of time spent with their Nana. Shirley loved life, taking adventures, and always had a smile on her face. She made friends wherever she went and her energy was contagious. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Karen (Joseph) Holt, of Traverse City, Michigan, granddaughter Kirstin (Keith) Nielson of Traverse City, Michigan, grandsons Nicholas (Jennifer) Kujala of Chicago, Illinois, Erik Kujala of Loveland, Colorado, Jason Gregg of Battle Creek, Michigan, step-granddaughters Victoria (Evan) Glass, Grandville, Michigan and Katherine Holt of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She also is survived by seven great grandchildren: Olivia, Tyler, Anna, Ella, Cecilia and Lucy Nielson, and Lewis Kujala, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Duane R. Gregg, her husband of fifty-eight years. She was also preceded in death by her son, Kent T. Gregg, seven sisters, Dorothy Avery, Marie Norton, Doris Thomas, Grace Holmes, Ruth Miller, Marjorie Bunnell, Marguerite Waggoner, and two brothers, Kenneth Holmes and Gerald Holmes.
