Obituary

Sarah “Sal” Louise Sherman, 62, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, May 9, 2020 at Glen Arbor Hospice after a long battle with brain cancer. Her loving daughter was by her side.

Sarah was born on October 12, 1957 in Marshall, MI, to Creighton and Rebecca (Sutton) Sherman.  She graduated from Marshall High School in 1975, and went on to earn an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology from Michigan State University.

After moving to Laramie WY, Sarah worked and did research in the University of Wyoming Parasitology Lab. After the birth of her daughter in 1994, she devoted her life to caring for her as an exceptional single mother. Sarah moved back to Michigan in 2004 and worked as a school bus driver for Kalamazoo Public Schools for many years. In 2014, after defeating her first bout of brain cancer, she transitioned to working as a bus aide for special needs students. In the fifteen years that Sarah worked as a bus driver and aide, she made a lasting positive impact on many students with her kindness, sensitivity, compassion, and humor.

While living in Kalamazoo, Sarah attended Christian Life Center, Valley Family Church, and Cross Community Church of the Nazarene. Sarah had a passion for studying God’s word, growing her faith, and sharing what she learned with others. She used her substantial artistic and mechanical creativity around the house to fix up and improve her home. Sarah loved spending time with family and close friends; she shared her warmth in many ways including making people laugh with her unique and witty humor.

For the final two months of her life, Sarah was cared for at the Glen Arbor Hospice residence in Battle Creek, MI, where she was able to remain comfortable, dignified, and surrounded by many truly loving and remarkable nurses.

Sarah is survived by her daughter, Sarah Rae Sherman; dog “Newt”; siblings Lee (Nancy) Sherman and Jane (Jim) Bosserd; nieces and nephews Jenna (Daemian) Koehler, Kara (Bryan) Nell, Mark (Nicole) Sherman, Steve (Lindsey) Bosserd, James (Meg) Bosserd, and Rebecca (Milo) Stovall.
