Roxanna "Roxy" L. (Lamphier) Cushman

September 28, 1943 — May 18, 2023

Battle Creek

Roxanna L. (Lamphier) Cushman of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 18, 2023, after a long illness which she endured with dignity and grace. She was born on September 28, 1943, in Marshall, Michigan to Edith and Vern Lamphier who preceded her in death, and she was raised with her older brother, Robert who survives.

Roxy graduated from Marshall High School in 1961, where she was a varsity cheerleader for 3 years. She was very popular in school and was voted the class clown. Roxy was involved in many clubs and sports during her school years. She loved to go to the “noon hour” and “tennis court” dances during this time.

After graduation, Roxy went to work at State Farm until 1965. She left the workforce to raise her family of two children, and this is where the love story between Roxy and Lionel began. Although they knew each other very well in school, they did not start dating until 1981. Once all the kids were out of school, they ran off to Las Vegas and were married in 1986.

Roxy was employed with Felpausch Food Centers from the early 1980’s as a Deli manager and eventually the company’s Deli Merchandiser/Director until 2000 when she returned home to join her husband who had retired from Kellogg’s in 1995. They traveled extensively during these years and would take off on a whim for several weeks at a time with no real destination in mind. They went on many of these adventures together.

Roxy and Lionel also took trips to Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vancouver, and a 4-week trip to Vegas, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, the Badlands, Biloxi, and Glacier National Park among other points along the way. They also enjoyed trying out new restaurants during their journeys.

They attended many car shows together and cruising their 1970 Chevelle Malibu that Roxy picked out because she “loved the color”. The couple were also in golf and bowling leagues together for many years. They would slip away on the occasional weekend to the family cabin on a lake close to Baldwin, Michigan, and according to trusted sources, she was an excellent fisherman. Roxy was a great cook and the family enjoyed spending holidays together in their home.

Roxy is survived by her husband, Lionel Cushman; four children, Brian (Jacqueline) Pyle, Jennifer (Christine) Pyle, Chad (Teresa) Cushman, Clint (Lori) Cushman; ten grandchildren, Derek (Samantha) Pyle, Justin (Sadie) Pyle, Maddie (Wesley) Cushman-Corey, Emma Cushman, Annie Cushman, Gabby Cushman, Paige Cushman, Emma Benham, Sydney Benham, and Kaleigh Tracy; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Anna, Lincoln, and Emmerson; and brother, Robert (Nancy) Lamphier and his three sons. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edith and Vern Lamphier, and her mother and father-in-law, Marge and Don Cushman.

The family would like to recognize Roxy’s best friend, Joyce Beadle. Also, Heidi Fuhrman, Deb Moon, and Deanna Livernois, all with Peachy Home Care who provided in-home care for Roxy and gave their hearts and souls to make her comfortable; Eaton County Palliative Care and their incredible staff; Oaklawn Hospice of Marshall, Michigan; as well as the countless friends and neighbors who shared their hearts with our family. We can’t begin to thank you all for your love and kindness.
