Rosemary Connelly

February 16, 1932 — April 21, 2018

Rosemary (Rothrick) Connelly, age 86, of Marshall, died Saturday morning, April 21, 2018 with her family and hospice caring for her at Eaton County Palliative Care.

Rosemary (most often known as Rose) was born February 16, 1932 to Charles and Ethel (Edwards) Rothrick in Marshall. She was raised by her paternal grandmother, Mary Rothrick, who immigrated from Stuttgart, Germany. Rose attended Sherman Elementary School. As a child she liked to ice skate, dance, and play ball. Rose was a member of Campfire Girls. She attended Marshall High School where she played the clarinet in the band. She graduated from MHS in 1950.

After high school graduation, Rosemary became employed with Eaton's in Marshall. She worked in the accounting department for a total of 26 years, retiring in 1986.

While working at Eaton's she met Calvin C. Connelly. Cal worked his magic on Rose and they were married on November 15, 1952 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall. They went to Chicago for a honeymoon. In 1953 they built the house they would make home all of their lives on Allcott Street. Cal preceded Rose in death in 2016. She moved to Maplewood the last year of her life, where she enjoyed socializing with the other residents there.

Rose developed a love of shoes and clothes after she started working! She made many of her own clothes. She created beautiful needlework and knitted pieces. Rose was a very good cook, especially when using her Grandma Rothrick's German recipes! The family favorite was her blueberry pie! She loved any time she could spend with her family, especially the children.

In 1954, son Michael Lavern was born, then their son Jeffrey Robert followed in 1956. Rose took time off from Eaton's while the boys grew to school age. Rose spent many happy years doing neighborhood events and sports with the kids and neighbors. The playground was across the street from their home so they were a popular spot for snacks and drinks. They enjoyed taking their camper to stay and fish at Lydie Lake.

After Cal and Rose retired, they spent winters in Winter Haven, Florida with a group of friends from Marshall. The couple enjoyed golfing and traveling with this group of close friends. Rose loved flowers, all of the family's dogs and antiques.

Rose has been a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church for 66 years. She was active in many church activities, most recently Missions work.

Rose is survived by her son Jeff (Bonnie) Connelly of Byron Center, granddaughters Ashley (Johnny) Smith of Dexter, Megan (Steve) Parker of Chelsea, and step-granddaughter Courtney (Brandon) Dirschell of Girard; great-grandchildren Kelbie and Quincy Smith, and Oliver Parker; daughters-in-law Joyce Connelly of Marshall and Tina Connelly of Coldwater, sister-in-law Mary Ellen Connelly of Marshall, cousin Eleanor (Skip) Bidelman of Battle Creek; numerous nieces and nephews. Rose was very fond of her two special honorary sons Jim Codde and John Sullivan both of Marshall.
