Roman "Ray" Cervantes, age 69, of Lafayette, IN and formerly of Marshall, died August 17, 2010 at University Hospital in Indianapolis. Ray was born January 8, 1941 in Granger, Texas to Ignacio DeJesus and Alberta (Reyna) Serbantez. He came to Marshall as an infant with his family in 1942. Ray attended Marshall schools. He worked for the Calhoun County Road Commission for 23 years until ill health forced his retirement. He moved to Lafayette, IN in 2005. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Ray loved his family, especially his role as grandfather! He had enjoyed fishing. Ray was the official tamale maker for the annual Serbantez family gathering! Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law Rene and Angela Serbantez of Lafayette, IN; his daughter Deanna Doss of Dayton, TN, and 6 grandchildren Heather (Richard) Dinkins of Ringgold, GA, Samantha Doss and Tyler Doss both of Dayton, TN, Isiah (Madi) Serbantez of Coldwater, and Jeffrey Serbantez and Samantha Serbantez both of Lafayette, IN; 3 great-grandchildren Payton Serbantez, Dillon Dinkins and Morgan Dinkins; his brothers Santos "Chano" (Bette Lee) Serbantez of Marshall, Benjamin A. Servantez of Ceresco, Ruben A. (Melinda) Cervantes of Battle Creek; his sisters Luselia "Lucy" Butson of Marshall and Rosalinda A. "Rosie" (Dennis) Serbantez-Pajak of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, a son Raul Serbantez in 1994, and a special friend Isabel Serbantez. Friends may call at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Friday after 2PM where the family will be present to greet friends and share memories 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM. A Rosary Service will be held Friday evening at the funeral home at 6PM.Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 21, at 11AM at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Naas officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.His brothers Santos, Benjamin and Ruben and Dennis Pajak, Robert Serbantez and Jeff Royer will serve as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearer is Ruben Guiterrez.The family suggests memorial contributions in Ray's memory to the American Diabetes Association. Assistance with memorials available at the funeral home.
