Roger W. Maples, 75, of Homer died on Saturday March 20, 2021 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor following a short illness.
Roger was born on January 24, 1946 in Albion to Richard and Leola (Gagnon) Maples. He graduated from Homer High School in 1964, and he graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in Science Education and Agricultural Engineering. On June 24, 2005 he married Kathleen J. Hitz in Tekonsha at the First Baptist Church.
Roger retired in 1999 after teaching for 29 years. He taught most of his years at Tekonsha Public Schools and a couple years at Michigan State University. Along with teaching, Roger also farmed in the Homer area his whole life. Roger also worked for M and M Catering in Tekonsha. Roger enjoyed being involved in the community taking part acting in plays, working behind the scenes in Homer Schools for over 20 years in the drama department, and singing in the church choir. He also enjoyed being outdoors, working on the farm, and cutting wood.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen; three children, from his marriage to Patricia Tasker, Carrie Loats, Richard (Mindy) Maples, Susan (Keith) Bailey; step-children Kelly (Dallian) Rehm and Brent (Shelly) Rehm; faithful dog "Molly"; nine grandchildren; and a brother Robin (Grace) Maples. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Richard L. Maples; and a son-in-law James Loats.
Visitation will take place from 4-7pm on Friday March 26, 2021 at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services 303 South Hillsdale Street Homer MI 49245. Due to Covid19 please use the marked entrances and exits and following rules for masks and social distancing. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 11am on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services 303 South Hillsdale Street Homer MI 49245. Interment will follow at West Eckford Cemetery. Memorial contributions are requested to the Homer First Presbyterian Church, 309 S Sophia St, Homer, MI 49245, or the Homer Community Schools Drama Department, 403 S Hillsdale St, Homer, MI 49245, or the Mission Department of Southwest Baptist University 1600 University Avenue, Bolivar, MO 65613.
