Robert “Bob” Francis Munie died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Robert was 100 years old and a lifelong devout Catholic. He was born on October 6, 1922, in Villa Grove, IL to Lawrence and Cecilia (Grimmer) Munie. He was the fourth of 10 children (4 boys and 6 girls). His family moved to Pana, IL where Bob attended Sacred Heart School through 8th grade then Pana Township High School graduating in 1940. He belonged to the Greatest Generation who grew up during the Great Depression and fought in World War II. Robert was drafted in 1942 into the US Army’s 341st Engineers, Company F out of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He was sent to work on construction of the Alaska Highway and after its completion was sent to England and then into Europe until the end of the war. Not long after coming home from the war, Bob and a friend decided to reenlist. Bob reenlisted in 1946 and entered service into the newly formed US Airforce. He served his country until 1953 having been stationed at many locations from Newfoundland, Canada to Puerto Rico.

Upon entering civilian life, Bob continued to work for the federal government having worked in several locations around the county until he came to Battle Creek, MI in 1966 to work as a programmer for DLSC at the Federal Center. He remained there until 1990 retiring as Systems Analyst. Bob served the US government for 49 years.

Not long after moving to Battle Creek, to his mother’s great relief, Bob finally met his wife, Therese Currier. They were married August 1967 at St. Jerome Catholic Church. They were blessed with three children: Joseph (1968), Paul (1970), and Mary (1971). Bob and Therese were married for 33 years until Therese passed away in December 2000.

Surviving Robert are two sons, Joseph (wife, Brenda) and Paul (wife, Amy); daughter, Mary Ruger (husband, Tim); one granddaughter, Erica; 6 grandsons, Matthew, Nolan, Alexander (wife, Catherine), Benjamin, Zachary, and Kyle; sister, Irene Plourde; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Robert was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, a member of the Knight of Columbus Council 575, and a gifted vegetable gardener. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity, and no-nonsense approach to life as well as his many war stories and stories about military life that are cherished greatly by his grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49015 on March 20, 2023, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm with a Rosary beginning at 6:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 61 N 23rd St, Battle Creek, MI 49015 on March 21, 2023, at 11:00am. And a Committal Service will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, MI 49012 at 1:00pm.
