Mike Wintersteen, age 89, of Marshall died on Thursday night, May 6, 2021 at Ascension Borgess in Kalamazoo.
Mike was born on August 9, 1931 in Lee Township to Elver and Ethel (Williams) Wintersteen. He attended the Striped School. He left school early to help on his family farm where he was raised. Mike has lived in the area all his life, except for his service to his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. Mike was a hard-working man his entire life and was known as a man who helped anyone in need.
Upon his return to Marshall Mike went to work at Eaton Corporation where he spent over 30 years before retiring. Mike had been a fork truck operator and semi-truck driver for the company. After retirement he enjoyed his work supervising the placement and finishing of manufactured homes.
He married Carolyn J. Thunder on August 17, 1952 in her parent's backyard on N. Mulberry Street in Marshall. The couple are remembered for their ceramic business, C & M Ceramics, which they ran for many years from their homes on Clinton Street and 15 Mile Road, helping people create ceramic art. They both loved their dogs which has included 8 Schnauzers over the years! The couple enjoyed bowling together and playing euchre. Mike loved shuffleboard! He especially enjoyed being part of a Talons Out Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. telling everyone "it was the best day of my life"! When Mike's health started failing the couple moved from their country home into Marshall in 2014.
Mike is survived by his wife Carolyn; their son Kevin Wintersteen of California; 5 grandchildren Graham Jones, Jeffery Jones, Gregory Means, Nicholas Wintersteen and Gurlich Wintersteen.; sisters Mattie Button, Mandy LaCourse and Nancy Vanderhorst; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Karen (Wintersteen) Jones, his sisters Catherine Ballinger and Edith Sheldon and brothers Frank Wintersteen and Cleory "Buster" Wintersteen.
There will be no public remembrance for Mike.
