Maurice G. Shackell

Pastor Maurice G. Shackell, 87, of Marshall died on April 2, 2018 at Oaklawn Hospital following a short illness.

Pastor Shackell was born on January 2, 1931, in Detroit to Maurice S. and Kate (Finch) Shackell. He graduated from Concordia High School in Milwaukee in 1948, and from Concordia College in Milwaukee in 1950. He then would graduate from Concordia Seminary in St, Louis Missouri in 1955. On May 27, 1961, he married Carol J. Deierlein in Detroit.

Pastor Shackell starting his pastoring at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grafton, Ohio. He later would move to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pontiac from 1961-1968; Unity Lutheran Church in Detroit from 1968-1976; and would retire from Zion Lutheran Church in Marshall from 1976-1996. After his retirement he would preach in Mason, and Camelry Chapel at Western Michigan University. In 2003 he was installed as Director of Older Adult Ministries at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Reverend Shackell was also active in the Marshall Community taking part with the Marshall Exchange Club, Kiwanis Club of Pontiac, Marshall Mobile Meals, and Lutheran School for the Deaf in Detroit. He enjoyed reading, walking, and traveling. He enjoyed spending time with animals especially dogs and his family.

He is survived by his wife Carol of Marshall; son Daniel (Christie) Shackell of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; daughter Julie (Randy) Taylor of Marshall; and grandchildren Zachary Taylor, and Caitlin Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Eric Milton and Betty Unruh.

Family will greet friends on Thursday April 5, 2018 from 3-7pm at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services Marshall Chapel, 723 US 27 North. Family willgreet friends from 10am-11am with a funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 11am on Friday April 6, 2018 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 114 East Minges Road, Battle Creek with Pastor Brad Hubbard officiating. Family will gather with friends following the services in the St. Mark Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will take place at 2pm at Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall. Memorial contributions are requested to the Marshall Mobile Meals or to St. Mark Lutheran Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
