Marion R. Mertens, 96, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away on March 31, 2021 at her residence.
Marion was born on December 2, 1924 in Ypsilanti, Michigan to Vern W. and Ruth (Finnegan) Burnell.
She was a 1943 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Marion married Leroy A. Mertens on July 11, 1943, sadly he preceded her in death in 1978.
Marion attended Argubright Business College in Battle Creek and then went to Kellogg Community College and earned her Associates Degree as a Para-Legal.
She worked at Ben Franklin's in Battle Creek, Needle Craft and Baby Shop in Battle Creek and at Jacobson's Department Store in Battle Creek as a manager of the lower level for many years.
Marion was an avid reader, loved to learn new things and enjoyed collecting antiques. She had been active as a Campfire Leader and with Girl Scouts. Marion volunteered with many different organizations in the Battle Creek area. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Marion is survived by her granddaughter; Shannon Bankhead of Tarzana, California, her special friends, the twins; Judy Klacking of Battle Creek, Michigan and Janie Hall of Battle Creek, Michigan. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Martens, her parents, her daughters; Carol Crance and Mary Areaux, her brother; Robert Burnell and her step- brother; Donald Jackson.
Funeral services for Marion will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, April 9, 2021 at Battle Creek Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel with Reverend Patricia Weatherwax, Pastor First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM at the cemetery prior to the funeral service.
