Karen Patricia Strand, age 78, of Battle Creek died Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.
Mrs. Strand was born on September 27, 1939 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Madelene (Benzinger) Skonberg. She has been a long-time resident of the Battle Creek area, moving here from Detroit in 1971. Karen had been employed as a teacher with the Battle Creek Schools, Post Elementary School. She taught Kindergarten and First Grade, retiring in 2003.
In 1963, she married Nils Kaare Strand. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2015.
Karen loved teaching and was a devoted educator. She also taught piano lessons out of her home for many years. She and her husband, Nils, enjoyed cruising on the Great Lakes aboard the Nauti-One trawler. She was a member of the Kalamazoo Sail & Power Squadron and served with the USP Squadron Basic Boating Class.
She is survived by her daughter, Kari Strand; and grandson, Taylor Strand both of Kalamazoo. Karen was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Kristin Paetsch.
The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremations Services, Battle Creek Chapel. A funeral Service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held 11 AM Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the funeral home with Deacon Hal Bohan officiating. Interment will take place in Irving Park Cemetery, Chicago at a later date.
