Harry J. Day Jr, 83, of Marshall died on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at Medilodge in Marshall following a long illness.
Harry was born January 24, 1936 in Marshall to Harry and Ella Mae (Holibaugh) Day Sr. He attended Marshall High School. On August 14, 1953 he married Joyce A. Lapham in LaGrange, Indiana.
Harry retired from Marshall Brass in 1996. He also worked at Sherer-Gillett and Bostick in Marshall for many years. He was a member of the Calhoun County Draft Horse Association, Michigan Stone Boat Association, and the Michigan Dynamometer Association. Harry was very active in Horse Pulls, and he won the National Draft Horse Pulls Championship in 1993 with his horses "Mose" and "Jerry" and was inducted in the Horse Pulling Hall of Fame. Harry was very active with the Calhoun County Fair Pulling his Draft Horses for over 60 years, pulling at the Detroit State Fair and at the Great Lakes International. He never missed a Calhoun County Horse Pull, and would travel though out Michigan, Indiana and Ohio pulling his team of Horses. In the winter months Harry would keep his horses working while logging lumber. He also enjoyed helping his son Larry on his farm. Harry will be remembered working his horses all year around on his track at the farm for hours.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Joyce of Marshall; children Larry Day of Battle Creek, Robert (Peggy) Day of Nashville, and Karen (Jerry) Crampton of Marshall; three grandchildren Jennifer (Joe) Hirst of Marshall, Joe (Corrin) Day of Leslie and Calvin Day of Nashville; two great-grandchildren Emmalie and Kaitlyn Hirst; siblings, Bernice Woods, Earl Day, and Donna Geyer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Ken Day, Don Day, Bob Day, Eleanor Huggett and Joyce Cummings.
A private graveside service took place on Thursday September 19, 2019 at Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall. Memorial contributions are requested to Calhoun County Horse Breeder's Association or to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan.
