Edward Henry Kornoely

September 6, 1923 — May 16, 2019

Edward Henry Kornoely, age 95, formerly of Albion, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Marshall Nursing and Rehabilitation Community with his family by his side.
He was born September 6, 1923, in Carson City, Michigan, the first of three children of John and Vivian (Arntz) Kornoely. Ed was a graduate of Carson City High School, class of 1941, where he played basketball and football.
His mother introduced him to the love of his life, Virginia Richards. Virginia was clerking in a small general store in Boon, Michigan, where his mother occasionally shopped with his little brother in tow. They were married on December 30, 1944 and moved to Albion where Ed was working at Starr Commonwealth's farms as a farm hand.
The following summer Ed was offered the position as farm manager and they moved to the main farm where Ed accepted the responsibility of employing men to help with the milking, raising hogs and gathering eggs as well as raising crops and hay. He also supervised many of the boys who lived at Starr Commonwealth who helped regularly on the farm.
Ed and Virginia purchased their own farm a few miles down the road from Starr's main farm and moved there in 1959. In addition to corn farming, they first bred and sold Yorkshire hogs but discontinued the hog business after a few years. Later a 6,000 laying-hen chicken house was built, and they sold cases of eggs to a wholesaler. A few years after that they also became a dealer for Ashley stoves and parts.
He was an avid deer hunter and had fond memories of hunting on his property with his grandson, Michael, brother, Ralph and nephew Kyle. He also loved telling the story about the pet rooster named Pete he had as a young boy. Pete would ride along to town and sit on the steering wheel until the family returned to the car, never once leaving the car even though the windows were left open. During retirement, Ed and Virginia enjoyed going to Rice Lake, Canada, fishing and spending winters in Florida with many of their area friends who also wintered in Florida.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, in February of this year; his son, Doug, in 2013; sons-in-law, Gary Nekola and Jim Gluvna; and brother-in-law, Clare Davis.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: daughters, Janet Nekola of DeWitt, Bernita (Roger) Likkel of Battle Creek, Delores Pufahl of Myakka City, Florida and Arlene (Robert) Wright of Ada; grandchildren, Michael (Sharie) Gibson of Bedford and Joe (Ellise Kingsberg) Nekola of Bartlett, IL; step-granddaughters, Cynthia Likkel and Kathy (John Hoberg) Likkel; great grandchildren, Cody Gibson and Catie Nekola; step-great grandsons, Tony and Sean Payne; several step-great great grandchildren; his brother, Ralph (Kathy) Kornoely of Marion, MI; sister, Eileen Davis of Plainfield, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Marshall Chapel of the Kempf Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held 11:30 AM at the funeral home with Reverend Andrea Johnson officiating. A luncheon will be provided after the service at the funeral home. Ed will be laid to rest in Albion Memory Gardens next to his wife and son.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Oaklawn Hospice. Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home.
