Ed Backus

Eugene Edward Backus, 95, died on September 26, 2020 at Medilodge of Marshall. Eugene was born on March 8, 1925 in Battle Creek, MI to parents Cecil and Annie (Walton) Backus. He served his country in the United States Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd and 517th Airborne. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Bielsky on September 30, 1960. He drove for North American Van Lines for twenty-one years, and then worked for Kellogg Cereal Company for twenty-three years, retiring in 1987. Ed was professional motorcycle racer in the early 1950's for the Indian Motorcycle Company. Ed and Betty enjoyed traveling, and especially attending reunions for the 82nd and 517th Airborne, which were held in various locations all throughout the country. He liked golfing and bowling. He belonged to the V.F.W, the Purple Heart, the American Legion and the D.A.V.

He is survived by his loving wife Betty Backus; his son, Rick (Shelby) Klibenski and daughter, Cathy J. (Scott) Reid; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Dick Gilcrest. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Edith.

Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will take place at Battle Creek Memorial Park, with Pastor Bill Cole officiating.
