Carol Noreen (Snyder) Dettl

May 11, 1929 — June 16, 2020

Carol Noreen Dettl, age 91, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at Northpointe Woods Care Facility.

Mrs. Dettl was born on May 11, 1929 in Avoca, Wisconsin to Walter and Della (Wonn) Snyder.   She was a long-time resident of the Battle Creek area.

On March 19, 1955, she married John P. Dettl in Waukegan, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on December 30, 2010.

Following John’s retirement as a pilot for the Kellogg Company and the Air National Guard, the couple moved to Allen, Michigan where they owned and operated Jack’s Cracker Barrel Grocery Store.  Carol returned to Battle Creek following John’s death.

Mrs. Dettl was a very active and creative person.  She was a lifelong quilter.  She lovingly made quilts for her children as well as for all of her grandchildren.  For many years, she competed in several bowling leagues in Battle Creek and in Litchfield. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Detroit Tiger fan.  Mrs. Dettl is remembered by her family as a loving mother and grandmother.  She had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.  She loved corny jokes.

She is survived by children, John (Lynn) Dettl of Perkasie, PA, Mark (Mary) Dettl of Grand Rapids, James (Lucy) Dettl of Dallas, TX and Jannette Ahlberg of Battle Creek; a daughter-in-law, Kim Dettl; 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; and a sister, Katherine Melgard of Pewaukee, WI.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joel Dettl; son-in-law, Daniel Ahlberg; and a grandson, Alex Ahlberg.
