Ann Smaston

December 20, 1931 — May 24, 2020

Ann Smaston, age 88 of Marshall Michigan, died of natural causes on May 24, 2020 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.  She was born December 20, 1931 in Lansing Michigan to Paul and Myrtle Beckwith.

Ann served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a longtime member of the Fleet Reserve Association.  Ann also was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marshall where she provided volunteer services for 13 years.

Ann’s greatest accomplishment was raising and loving her children and she took great pride watching them mature as adults.  Ann was preceded in death by her husband Dan of 43 years in 1998.  She is survived by her daughter Pam (Al) Buchko of Battle Creek Michigan and her three sons Paul (Brenda) Smaston of Greenville South Carolina, Russ (Carla) Smaston of Northville Michigan, and Daniel (Sue) Smaston of Bentonville Arkansas.  Ann is also survived by four grandchildren – Erin Buchko, Sarah (Dan) Miller, Scott Smaston and Nicole Smaston.

An interesting fact is Ann lived in 12 different cities and managed 15 different moves in the first 25 years of her marriage.  The most remarkable travel occurred in 1958 when Ann crossed the Atlantic Ocean by ship with her three year-old daughter and a six-week old son to meet her husband in Morocco where they would live the next three years.

At a later date, Ann’s memorial service will be held at Fort Custer Military Cemetery, with full military honors.
