Albert Douglas Thompson, Jr., 72 of Albion, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2020 at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital in Jackson.

He was born on July 26, 1947 to Albert and Lois (Loveland) Thompson in Hastings, Michigan. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1965 and on October 5, 1967 he was inducted into the United States Army at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. After being Honorably Discharged on October 11, 1969, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Two Overseas Bars, the Sharpshooter M 14 and the Combat Infantry Badge, he went on to retire from the Army National Guard attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant on July 26, 2007.

He was a member of the Patrick Leo Hanlon American Legion Post #55 -Albion. Al was affectionately known by his friends as 50 Cal-Al. He was a very outgoing and helpful person who had a great sense of humor. Al enjoyed hunting and golfing, but he especially loved being surrounded by his family and friends.

Albert is survived by his children, Wendy (Kevin) Converse of Athens and Todd Thompson of Albion; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Converse of Athens, Aaron Converse of Athens and Willow Thompson of Diamondale. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private memorial service with full military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 from 1:00 until 3:30 pm at the Patrick Leo Hanlon American Legion Post #55 1230 Edward’s St. Albion, Michigan 49224.
