Johanne "Tony" Marie Saltzgaber, 91, of Tekonsha, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on October 28, 1932 to Robert "Bob" and Mildred "Babe" (Thompson) Sherwood in Jackson, MI. Tony married her high school sweetheart, Derald “Salty” W. Saltzgaber on February 14, 1952 in Jackson, MI, they were married for 62 years before he preceded her in death on August 3, 2014.
Tony graduated in 1950 from Jackson High School, and she was the vice-president of her class. She was also the head Drum Majorette of the marching band as well as involved in many athletic teams.
Tony's family was very important to her. She went to her children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities. She enjoyed working in her garden and tending to her flowers. Tony was a very active lady. She would run in races and do a variety of outdoor activities. She helped get the Tekonsha high school track built, and she helped to spearhead Durham Park in Tekonsha. She was a big Detroit sport teams’ fan and would watch different sports. She was a lunchroom supervisor for Tekonsha Schools for 19 years, retiring in 1991.
Tony is survived by her loving children, Karen (Keith) Cronk of Augusta, MI, Susan (Tom) Magocs of Coldwater, MI, Dianne (Jerry) VandenHout of Coldwater, MI, Douglas (Pam) Saltzgaber of Dorr, MI, Brian Saltzgaber of Fremont, IN; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and her brother-in-law, Jerry Kulpinski.
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Saltzgaber; parents; siblings, Clark (Lydia) Sherwood, Donna (Arthur) Hinkle, Darrell (Gerry) Sherwood and sister, Judy Kulpinski.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2024, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm with a Memorial Service at 12:00pm at Kempf Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Marshall, Michigan with Melanie Johnson and Shirley Hackett officiating.
The burial of Tony’s cremated remains will be in Riverside Cemetery. The memorial service will be followed by a late luncheon at Union Church in Tekonsha.
