Wagner T. "Wag" Weinert

Wagner T. "Wag" Weinert, 90 of Marshall died on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence surrounded by his family following a short illness.

Wag was born on August 8, 1927 in Kingsford to Karl and Marie (Kaulfurst) Weinert. He attended Alpha High School until 1945 when he joined the Merchant Marines. While in the service he finished his high school education, and in 1946 he enlisted in the Army. His early military career started with transporting troops and supplies in the Atlantic, and he later became a paratrooper. Wag was honorably discharged in 1948. After his discharge Wag was taking classes at Western Michigan University. He met G. Ann Glynn while working at the VA Hospital in Battle Creek. They married on November 6, 1954 in Kalamazoo at the United Methodist Church.

Wag worked in a Lumber Camp in the Upper Peninsula before moving to the work at the Battle Creek Veterans Hospital in 1950. In July 1956, he began his career as a State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer. He started in the Eastern Upper Peninsula District 4 Newberry, and later transferred to the Jackson District and retired in 1990 after 34 years of service. Wag was a member of St. Albans Masonic Lodge #20 in Marshall, Started the Masonic Lodge in Newberry, Life member of both York and Scottish Rites, Royal Arch Masons in Homer, York Rite College, life member of the National Rifle Association, and Trout Unlimited. While working in the U.P., Wag fell in love with fishing all of the rivers and lakes, and taking the family camping in his free time. He also was well known for his humor and pranks he loved pulling on family, friends and co-workers.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ann of Marshall; children David (Cindi) Weinert of Santa Barbara, California, Gary (Nancy) Weinert of Bloomfield Hills, and Diane Weinert of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren, Annalise, Andrew, Madison, Kendall, Colin; siblings, Otto Weinert of Crystal Falls and Dorothy Sahn of Escanaba; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Louise Scott, Mary Erickson, Evelyn Hohman; and brothers, Oswald, Ernie, Fred, Carl, and Clarence Weinert.

Family will gather with friends on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 12-6pm at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services Marshall Chapel 723 US 27 North with family present to greet friends from 12-2pm and 4-6pm. Memorial contributions are requested to the National Rifle Association or to the Alzheimer's Association. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.
