Vernon H. Hazzard

Vernon H. Hazzard Sr., 89, of Marshall died on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Mr. Hazzard was born on September 12, 1929 in Saginaw to Aaron H. and Vernie M. (Evans) Hazzard. He graduated from Spring Arbor High School in 1948. Mr. Hazzard enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948, and while in the service he attended University of Maryland. He was honorable discharged in 1952, and would finish his college at Valpo Tech as an Electronic Technican.
While serving in the Air Force, Mr. Hazzard was stationed in Berlin, and when attending church he noticed Ethel E. Purtz singing in the choir. He fell in love with Ethel and before his tour was over they arranged a date and the two where married on February 13, 1952 in Berlin. The couple came back to the United States on the General Maurice Rose. While on the ship, the husbands and wives where separated on two different decks. Of course the ladies had the better accommodations. Mr. and Mrs. Hazzard began their life in the United States together in Florida and would later move to Indiana.
Mr. Hazzard worked for many years with the FAA. He checked approaches and enroute navigation for airplanes. He also was a licensed pilot and managed to get some time flying the FAA DC-3. He retired from the FAA in 1984. Mr. Hazzard attended Family Altar Bible Church, was a member of the Michigan District of the Church of The Nazarene and a Charter member of the Marshall Church of the Nazarene. Mr. and Mrs. Hazzard worked for many years in the Nazarene Mission Field and self-supported six missions trips together in the Netherlands, Portugal, the Azores, Argentina, Mexico, and New Guinea.
He is survived by his wife Ethel of Marshall; sons, Reverend Vernon (Beverly) Hazzard II of Sandusky, Michigan and Aaron (Nancy) Hazzard of Lafayette, Indiana; grandchildren Vernon Hazzard III, Michael Hazzard, Dr. Matt (Lindsey) Hazzard, and Lindsay (Derrick)Hazzard- Payne; great-grandchildren, Lana Hazzard, Lily Hazzard, Juliana Hazzard Anderson Hazzard, Olivia Payne, Emily Payne Maxwell Payne, and Abigail Payne. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Leona Collins Dorothy Delamarter and Helen Arnett.
Family will greet friends from 2-3pm on Saturday January 26, 2019 at the Marshall Chapel of the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services 723 US 27 North Marshall with funeral services celebrating his life taking place at 3pm with Pastor Richard Gertuen officiating. Family will gather with friends following the services in the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services reception hall Marshall. A private interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
