Thomas "Tom" Charles Pastor, 71, of Battle Creek passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 after a short illness.
Tom was born on July 9, 1947 to Charles and Marjorie (Hinkley) Pastor in Battle Creek. He graduated in 1965 from Lakeview High School
Tom enlisted into the United States Army in 1968 and served as a Military Police Officer (MP) at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. While there, he joined the West Point Military Police Honor Guard. After leaving the Army, he fulfilled a promise to his parents by completing his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Shortly thereafter, Tom met his future wife, Cinda Guthrie, in 1973. They were married on May 10, 1974.
Prior to his marriage, Tom applied for and successfully graduated from the Michigan State Police Training Academy, starting his career as a Michigan State Police Trooper. He retired from the Battle Creek Post in 1996 with 25 years of service.
Tom was known by many in the Battle Creek area as a Y.A.B.A. youth bowling coach at Nottke's Bowl, where he spent many of his Saturdays over the years. He went on to hold many positions within Y.A.B.A., including as a State Representative and as Vice President of the Michigan State Y.A.B.A. for many years.
After his first retirement, Tom worked for a number of years with his friends at McBride Merchandising and Q.S.S. After his second retirement, Tom was part of the Honor Guard at Fort Custer National Cemetery. He enjoyed reading, bowling, and having coffee with his friends. His other interests were hunting, shooting, and attending MSU football games with his family. Tom loved attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cinda Pastor of Battle Creek; children, Lisa (Joseph Kwon) Stanford of Bloomingdale, Chad (Kristie) Pastor of Haslett, Rashedia Pastor of Battle Creek, and Sherman Pastor and partner Halanah Holton of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Brent Sherlock, Marissa Sherlock, Devin Sherlock and his partner Harley Hagerty, Keegan Pastor, Kylie Pastor, Chance Pastor, Jensen Emmel, Westin Holton, and My'Zanae Brown; greatgrandchildren, Jayden Henderson, and D'Ayre Sherlock; sister-in-law, Carla (Steve) Benjamin of KY; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marjorie Pastor; and brother, Michael Pastor.
Visitation will be held at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 SW Capital Ave., Battle Creek Chapel on Monday July 23, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with family present to greet friends at that time. A memorial service will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday July 24, 2018 at 1pm. An interment will be held at a later date with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marjorie A. Pastor Memorial Scholarship. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Battle Creek Chapel.
