Silas "Ken" Kenneth Lowder

May 9, 1926 ~ March 17, 2018 (age 91)

Obituary

Silas Kenneth "Ken" Lowder, 91, of Marshall died on March 17, 2018 at the Marshall Nursing and Rehabilitation Community following a long illness.

Ken was born on May 9, 1926 in Marshall to Silas B. and Lillian M. (Bugden) Lowder. He attended Marshall High School for three years before being called to serve in World War II during his senior year. He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II as a coxswain landing troops during the invasions of the islands. He was called back to serve his country during the Korean War, again on an LST.

After his honorable discharge, Ken met and fell in love with Alice I. Gary. The couple were married on December 20, 1947 in Angola, Indiana. Ken's mom said it "wouldn't last"(mainly due to knowledge of Ken being a bit set in his ways!) and happily she has been proven wrong, which she was certainly happy about!

Ken owned and operated several service stations and transmission shops in Battle Creek during his life as well as a U-Haul franchise as part of those businesses. Alice kept the books for him during those times.

Ken was a member of the Claude E. Hale VFW Post #4073 (which he joined while still overseas with the help of his father). He bowled in several leagues in Marshall as well as golfing with his service station crew. Ken enjoyed his work like he would enjoy a hobby!

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Alice of Marshall; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Janet Lowder of Battle Creek, and daughter and son-in-law Karen and Mark Loyer of Marshall; four grandchildren, Stacey (Brian) Bornamann, Melissa (Tim) Miller, Mark (Gail Taylor) Loyer Jr., and Courtney (Ryan) Moore; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother Robert Lowder of Homer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother William Lowder.

A visitation will take place on Sunday April 8, 2018 from 3pm-5pm Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Service Marshall Chapel 723 US 27 North.
