Shirley Jean McGhee

February 9, 1935 — February 6, 2018

Shirley Jean (Mardis) McGhee, age 83, of Battle Creek passed away February 6, 2018. Shirley was born in Birmingham, Kentucky on September 20, 1934 to Emmett and Flarray (York) Mardis.
She graduated from Fordson High School with the class of 1952 and went to work as a Secretary for Post Cereals. Shirley married Cordell Hull "C.H." McGhee on January 15, 1955 in Battle Creek. They spent 55 loving years together. C.H. preceded her in death on April 3, 2010.
Shirley left Post after 4 or 5 years with the company to stay home and raise their 4 children. When the children were old enough, Shirley went back to work. She coiled guitar strings for the V.C. Squier Guitar company until they closed their doors. Then she took a position at Battle Creek Equipment. She retired from Tokai Rika and then worked part time with Target until her husband became ill.








Shirley was a big animal lover. She also had a huge heart and loved children. Shirley wanted to be every child's grandmother, and made sure every animal was fed. She enjoyed music and festivals. Shirley was a skilled seamstress and proudly made her children's clothing. she also liked to travel.








Visitation will be held at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 2838 SW Capital Avenue, Battle Creek Chapel on Friday February 9, 2018 from 4-8pm. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday February 10, 2018 at 11am. Shirley will be laid to rest in Morgan Cemetery, next to her husband.
Shirley is survived by her children, Randy McGhee of Union City, Tim McGhee of Battle Creek, Dave McGhee of Baldwin, and Shelley (Rick) Simpkins of VA; grandchildren, Justin McGhee of VA, Crystal McGhee of TN, Joshua Montgomery of Otsego, and Ashley Hufnagle of Constantine; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Flarray Mardis, sister, Velma Allen; brother, Vernon Mardis; and brother, Claude Mardis.








Memorial contributions are requested to the Alzheimer's Association, or the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremations Services, Battle Creek Chapel.
