Roy J. Hazel, 89, of Marengo Township died on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family following a short illness.
Roy was born on September 1, 1928 in Eckford Township to Roy and Floy (Brainard) Hazel. He attended Marshall Schools. On October 29, 1949 he married the love of his life Donna B. Blight in Albion. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2018.
Roy worked for Conrail for 46 years retiring in 1990. He was a founding member of the Marengo Fire Department and was active Chief for several years retiring in 1989.. He started farming in 1967 retiring from that endeavor in 2016 at the age of 87. He loved the outdoors, working on his farm, and utilizing his backhoe in anyway possible. Roy enjoyed helping others, teaching children about fire prevention, and family get togethers.
He is survived by his children, Tim Hazel, Nancy (Morris) Evans, Beverly (Joseph) Adair, Doreen (Ray) Hart, and Todd (Barb) Hazel; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a brother Earl (Pat) Hazel. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Mary Hazel; and siblings, Floyd Hazel, Frank Hazel, Louise Cartwright, and Margaret Prey.
Family will greet friends on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, from 10-11am at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services 723 US 27 North with a funeral service taking place at 11am with Mr. Ken Blight officiating. Interment will follow at Marengo Memorial Cemetery. Family will gather with friends following the committal services at the Kempf Funeral Home Reception Hall. Memorial contributions are requested to the Marengo Firefighters Association. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
