Marshall J. "Jack" Hungerford

September 23, 1936 — April 10, 2018

Marshall J. "Jack" Hungerford Jr., 81, of Battle Creek died on Monday April 10, 2018 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility following a long illness.
Jack was born on September 23, 1936 in Coldwater to Marshall and Ruth (Hawes) Hungerford Sr. He spent his childhood years in Birmingham and his teenage years in Jackson where he graduated from Jackson High School in 1954. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and later learned the construction trade from his father at Hungerford Construction Company in Jackson. Jack was co-owner and manager of Niedzielski Hardware in Bay City for several years. He joined Wolohan Lumber in 1974 and managed stores in Michigan and Ohio for 22 years. He spent his last working years at Lowes in Battle Creek, and retired in 2000.
Jack married Marian Cahill in 1955 and they had three children together. They divorced in 1970. Jack later met and married Sharon Nevsimal in April 1973.
Surviving are his wife Sharon of 45 years of Battle Creek; sons Alan (Wanda) Hungerford of Grants Pass Oregon, Gregory (Dahli) Hungerford of Laie, Hawaii, and Jeffrey (Deanna) Hungerford of Fennville; seven grandchildren Lance, Kyle, Sean Hungerford of Laie, Hawaii, Chanse Hungerford of Boise, Idaho, Dr. Kyrie (Michael) Hungerford of Chicago Illinois, Chevy (Anna) Hungerford of Austin Texas, and Kasey Hungerford of Portland, Oregon; sisters Virginia Moore of Mesa, Arizona and Susan Sommer of Glendale, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Marian.
Jack was a member of Westlake Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder, a former member of the Jackson Jaycees, and past vice-president of the Battle Creek Host Lions Club. He enjoyed traveling, seasonal camping, fishing, golf and building projects. He especially enjoyed his grandkids visiting at the lake where he would take them on the pontoon rides and teach them to fish. He and Sharon built their first home together in Huron, Ohio in 1978. Jack was diagnosed with dementia and later Alzheimer's Disease in the mid 1990's. While a patient at Marion Burch Daycare, he was a patient volunteer for several years and was a big help to the staff and his special friend Kim Flanders. He was also a resident at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility for the last seven years. He loved his Boston Terriers, of which he and Sharon had five over the years, his favorite being Corki.
Jack was a warm, Loving, compassionate man who sincerely loved his work by helping people plan and build homes and remodel projects. He was always there to lend a hand in any way and his advice was often sought for construction issues. His wealth of information was unfortunately lost due to his illness, but his personality continued to be loving and kind. His voice, smile and sense of humor have been missed by many for too many years; may he now rest and be restored in God's loving hands.
