Margaret J. "Jean" Reichow

October 7, 1930 — August 19, 2018

Margaret J. "Jean" Reichow, age 87, of Albion, passed away on Sunday morning, August 19, 2018, at Maplewood of Marshall in the loving care of her family, the Maplewood staff and Oaklawn Hospice.

Jean was born on October 7, 1930 in Jackson to Howard Leon and Muriel Rebecca (Shanks) Bayn. She attended Albion schools, graduating from Albion High School in 1948. After graduation she worked for the local telephone company in their drafting department for 2 years.

She met James F. Reichow and they were married on April 15, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion. That day Jean became a "farmer's wife" and as we all know, a working partner with Jim as they worked the family farm that had been in the family since 1837. They also farmed land for several neighbors with farms in Jackson County. Jim and Jean "officially" retired in 2006 but continued to help son Doug and family as they continued the family's farming traditions. Jim preceded her in death on July 30, 2014. Jean continued living on the family farm until she moved to Maplewood due to ill health.

Jean was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion, where she was a member of the Friendship League. Jean volunteered at Harrington School in Albion for many years. She served as a member of the Albion School Board and was a 4-H Leader for 25 years, teaching knitting. Jean served on the State of Michigan 4-H Council in the late 1960's. She served as a 4-H judge for needlework and other 4-H crafts. She was a member of Progressive Farmers and the Farm Bureau. She liked to pass time reading and knitting. Jean was a talented quilter and has made memory quilts for her grandchildren as they graduated from high school. She and Jim were members together of the South Albion Community Club. She liked to play cards with Jim and their friends. She enjoyed traveling together with Jim, traveling around the country. When their daughter Elaine moved to Seattle, that became their destination. They drove there and took a different route every time to see different sights and explore new areas!

Jean is survived by her sons Fred (Deb) Reichow of Homer and Doug (Pam) Reichow of Albion, daughters Elaine Ervin (Dave Campbell) of Seattle, WA, and Linda (Greg) Hicks of Rockford; 9 grandchildren and great-grandchildren with one on the way! ; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Jim, her parents, her sister Elizabeth Aukermann and brother Robert L. Bayn.

Friends may call at the Homer Chapel of Kempf Family Funeral & Cremation Services, 303 S. Hillsdale Street, on Wednesday from 5PM to 8PM.

A Celebration of Jean's life will be held at the Homer Chapel on Thursday, August 23 at 11AM with Rev. James S. Codde serving the family as Celebrant.
