Jon O. Sprandel

Jon O. Sprandel, 82 of Albion passed away at his home on Friday, May 24, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Jon was born on August 21, 1936 in Angola, Indiana to Walter and Anna Marie(Yotter) Sprandel. He graduated from Albion High School in 1954, and attended Albion College. Jon entered the United States Army in 1959, serving as a communication specialist while stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1962. On March 13, 1971, he married his soul mate Nancy I. Spafford in Frankfort, Michigan.
Jon worked for 46 years at Albion Malleable Industries. He was a very active member of the Albion community. He volunteered with the Festival of the Forks parade, served six years as secretary and treasurer of the South Central Chapter of the American Foundryman's Society, twenty years as president and secretary of Hayes Albion Golf League, twenty-six years on the City Merchant Bowling League. He was a member of Albion Forks Senior Center where he served as president for five years. Jon was active in the First United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees for five years. He was inducted into the Albion Multicultural Hall of Fame in 2012. He enjoyed playing his tuba in Albion's and neighboring community bands, as well as playing with the German and Dixieland bands throughout Michigan.
Jon was an avid sports fan. He officiated for many different high schools and colleges in the area. He was recognized by the Michigan High School Athletic Association for his 30+ years of service. He served 36 years as a member of the Albion College "chain gang" and was inducted into the Albion College Hall of Fame in 1998. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, bowling, and running.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy of Albion; children, Cheri (Kenneth) Bedford of Paris, Texas and Derick Sprandel of Goshen, Indiana; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; siblings, Charles (Alice) Sprandel of Sarasota, Florida, Mary (David) Ringer of San Antonio, Texas, and David (Bette) Sprandel of Mendham, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 10-11am at the First United Methodist Church Wesley Chapel, 600 East Michigan Avenue, Albion. The memorial service will begins at 11am with Pastor Thomas Hollowood officiating. Following the service, all are invited to attend a luncheon at Tennant Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Forks Senior Center or to the First United Methodist Church of Albion.
